Eat The Ashes

This is a track recorded and mixed by my brother Jem Godfrey. It was part of the ‘Curious Things’ mini album sessions and is probably one of the songs I’m most proud of as a writer. We often play this song at the acoustic shows and even performed it on the live album (although the version we did there wasn’t brilliant if I’m being honest). Jem’s mix absolutely nailed the feel behind the song and I think he’s the only guy who I could have trusted to do that.

This song has come a long way since the original refrain was "get yourself a ladder". A bit like Yesterday and Scrambled Eggs. This is my wife's favorite song, and it's nice to finally see it get the Dominique Brethes treatment and appear on an Album properly.

I remember the fire
That I set at the School
In that autumn of ’82
I gave to the heat
Simply all it could eat
And it cured me of you
But for me
It’s not the first time
And for me…

Time to eat the ashes
That I left behind
Don’t tell me you’ve wasted
Your whole life

My paraffin sin
Lights a blaze from within
Let it blush, let it bloom and then die
This world is a joke
When it’s wrapped up in smoke
It consumes all your ego and pride
But for me…

Well I tried and I tried
There’s some things you can’t do without
And I lied and I lied
There’s some fires you cannot put out
But for me…

Somewhere there’s a fire
With you inside
